2018 FOXBOROUGH SUPERCROSS | THE AFTERMATH

Photos by Jim McMillianRound 15 of the 2018 Monster Energy Supercross series kicked off in the sunny afternoon in Foxborough, Massachusetts where Gillett Stadium was host to one of the craziest races we’ve seen all year. Each and every weekend, the plot thickens in both classifications while with riders on their championship hunt. In the 250 class, Zach Osborne looked to capitalize on the injury of Austin Forkner–and in the 450 Class, Jason Anderson looked to extend his points lead even further away from Marvin Musquin. Here’s how it panned out.

Opening CeremoniesOn this day, the racing would start much earlier in the afternoon as opposed to the usual night schedule.  It was quite a site to see opening ceremonies in the light.

Monster GirlAfter opening ceremonies came to a close and the fans returned to their seats, it was time to lift the 30 second board and drop the gate.

Zach OsborneCurrent Points leader and defending 250 East champion Zach Osborne dominated 250 heat number one to start off the afternoon. Followed behind him was Star Racing’s “fill in” Thomas Rammette in second, and Troy Lee Designs’ Red Bull KTM’s rookie competitor Sean Cantrell in third.

Jeremy martinJeremy Martin started the season off slow, but won last weekend in Minneapolis. He came into Foxborough with confidence and the favorite to win. He showed the field what he was made of in his heat by taking the win. Behind him was RM ATVMC KTM’s Anthony Rodriguez in second, and Troy Lee Designs’ Red Bull KTM’s Jordon Smith in third.

Jason AndersonNext up, the big bikes. In 450 heat one, it was all about Jason Anderson. Jason had an up and down first part of the day in Foxborough. He mentioned that he felt smooth in different places of the track, but the surface and soil was a challenge coming into the afternoon program. Behind him fell Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin, and fan favorite (Yoshimura JGRMX Suzuki’s) Malcolm Stewart in third.

JustiN BarciaThe return of Justin Barcia had the fans on their feet. Barcia has been a fan favorite ever since he hit the scene. He made his return to racing from an injury last weekend in Minneapolis, and scored a fifth overall on the night. In Foxborough, the East Coast native showed his true speed and raw talent by clinching 450 heat number two. Followed closely behind him was Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac in second, and RM ATVMC KTM’s Blake Baggett in third.

Kyle PetersNext up, the LCQ’s. In the 250 LCQ, it was all about Kyle Peters. Yoshimura JGRMX Suzuki released a press release last week stating that Kyle sustained a torn ACL just from riding in the pits and slipping last weekend in the icey conditions of Minneapolis. But, he showed up to Foxborough and rode his heart out. He crashed out of his heat, so he got transferred straight to the 250 LCQ (of which he would win). Behind him fell privateer’s Wilson Fleming, Cody Vanbuskirk and Tanner Basso.

Kyle CunninghamAs always, the 450 LCQ did not disappoint. Kyle Cunningham made a come from behind victory, and put the entire crowed on their feet. Followed behind him was Alex Ray, Aj Catanzaro and Dustin Pipes.

Alright, now its time for what you really want to know. What went down in the main’s.

Sean CantrellRookie, Sean Cantrell has been really putting in the work lately. He finished in 5th in the 250 main event.

Jeremy martinFor Jeremy Martin, things did not go his way. He crashed on the first lap, and was forced to push hard. In the end, he worked his way up from dead last to fourth.

Kyle PetersAs we said a few photos ago, it was an amazing night for Kyle Peter’s. Although he wasn’t at his potential, he made it work–and it paid off. He clinched a third on the podium.

Zach OsborneThis picture pretty much sums up the rest. Jordon Smith followed right behind in second, while Zach Osborne took the win by a landslide. We love the positive sportsmanship.

Monster GirlsNow this you don’t want to miss. The 450’s were intense.

Blake BaggettIt was a hard charge by the number 4 of Blake Baggett. Ironically, he finished fourth in Foxborough.

Jason andersonCurrent Points leader Jason Anderson really gave it all he had in the rough afternoon conditions that Gillett Stadium had to offer. He played it smart, and rode smooth. But most importantly, he didn’t push himself too hard. He grabbed third.

Add New Post ‹ Motocross Action Magazine — WordPressNow this is where things get interesting. Eli Tomac stayed in second for most of the race, but wasn’t far behind. After Marvin made a mistake, he flipped on his “beast mode” switch and charged for the lead. As the white flag waved, he was looking to be the winner. But, Musquin made a very questionable pass for the lead. In the end, Tomac still managed to finish in second.

Marvin MusquinMarvin Musquin made an early jump to the lead, and stayed up front for almost the entire 20 minutes. The lap before the last lap, he made a small mistake in the whoops leaving the door open for Eli. Tomac of course took it, and Marvin was left with second at the time. But coming into the final three sections of the track, he put what appeared to be a straight take out move on the number 3 and took the win. Crazy right?

On this afternoon in racing, the only way to describe the event was as simple as the word “shocking”. The three biggest stories coming into round 16 in Salt Lake City, was that 250 West points leader Aaron Plessinger was going to wrap up his title, 450 points leader Jason Anderson could wrap up his title, and, of course, the “Musquin vs Tomac” battle. But, spoiler alert–none of this happened. It was a crazy night, and things will have to pick up in Vegas. Here’s how the afternoon broke down in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Main EventAlright, now its time for the races we know you really want to know about. The mains! First up, the 250 guys.

Fifth place belonged to the number 40 of Chase Sexton. He grabbed himself a bad start, and was forced to work his way through the pack.

Aaron PlessingerUnfortunately, this wasn’t the night that Aaron Plessinger had in mind. He needed to finish third or better to win the championship on this day. But due to a few mistakes, he fell short and finished fourth.

Joey SavatgyJoey Savatgy has a had a tough season. But he sure is turning up the heat late in the season. He grabbed a solid gate jump, and lead for multiple laps until getting passed by teammate Adam Cianciarulo and Shane McElrath. After that, he may have gotten pressure from plessinger for third, but when the checkered flag waved, he held on for a podium spot.

Adam CianciarloYou can see in Adam Cianciarulo’s eyes how badly he wants to win a main event this year. He managed to make an epic pass on Joey Savatgy for first–but no more than seconds after, he was passed by Shane McElrath for first. He would have to settle for a second in SLC.

Shane McElrtahThere is no doubt that this one felt great for Shane McElrath. He hasn’t won since A1 earlier this year. Can you believe that? He put together a solid performance, and made some epic passes in the whoop section for the win.

250 PODIUM SLCOfficial results: Shane McElrath (1st), Adam Cianciarulo (2nd), Joey Savatgy (3rd).

Christian CraigChristian Craig scored his career best 450 finish of a fourth in SLC. He had third on lock, until Eli Tomac rolled through and demanded a podium spot.

Blake BaggetBlake Baggett just announced this week that he has extended his contract with RM/ATV KTM. With that being said, he rode his heart out in front of the entire Rocky Mountain staff that was in attendance. He finished third on the night.

Eli TomacEli Tomac is without a doubt one of the strongest and most aggressive riders of his generation. He could’ve caught first no problem if he hadn’t have made that big mistake while going for third. After he picked himself back up, he managed to cross the line in second on the night.

Marvin MusquinAt the end of the day, it was all about the number 25 of Marvin Musquin. He jumped to a solid start, and checked out from the pack. Tomac could not catch him. But, don’t think there isn’t still a chance ET3 can get him back after last weekend. I guess we will find out in Las Vegas.

TOP NEWS AFTER ST. LOUIS:

Jason andersonThere is no doubt that this was the longest tire change in the history of mid-race pit stops in Supercross. Jason Anderson’s front wheel came into contact with Eli Tomac’s peg, and broke the spokes in that first turn crash. Jason had to pull off and switch the front wheel before continuing on. With this incident, Anderson and Musquin are now just 14 points apart. “They never said it’d be easy.” said Jason Anderson on Social Media on Sunday.

Josh HillJosh Hill made his return to the series as a fill-in for the injured Cooper Webb . He was not pleased with his 16th in the main.

Josh commented: “I was bummed on my riding and fitness all weekend. But I still got a LCQ win, and winning any race in front of a stadium of people is a good feeling. Hoping to step it up next weekend. Huge thanks too everyone.”

Josh GRantJosh Grant was looking very smooth.

These days, you can head to any local track in SoCal to find a plethora of pro’s in preparation for the 2018 AMA outdoor Nationals. On this particular Thursday we saw quite a few familiar faces, as well as some new ones. In fact, this coming Thursday, May 17, Glen Helen will clear the track from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to allow only AMA Pro riders, who are entered in the Hangtown or Glen Helen National to get their first look at the complete Glen Helen National track. It will be a shakedown for the track and for the riders. So, if you want to see hot action come to Glen Helen to watch this Thursday. Here’s a teaser of what we saw last Thursday.

Broc TickleBroc Tickle has been keeping his skills sharp while waiting for the word from WADA.

Todd WatersAustralian Todd Waters was doing some testing of his own in preparation for his new gig in the MXGP. Unfortunately, Todd went to Europe and broke his collarbone before his Team Honda fill-in gig ever happened.

Justin BarciaJustin Barcia is never shy to throw his bike around. Especially mid-air.

Kyle ChisholmOur friends at 51Fifty were also in attendance. This is Kyle Chisholm’s 51Fifty YZ250F.

Dillan SchwartzRemember the name Dillan Schwartz. He is a fast amateur kid coming through the ranks.

Josh GrantJosh Grant was rehabbing both of his ankles by riding as fast as he could.

Austin HowellChris Howell gave Glen Helen’s new rolling whoop section a test run.

Broc TickleBroc Tickle is still keeping up with his training and riding. However, after Broc’s B-sample came back positive from WADA, KTM terminated his contract for 2018.

Justin BarciaWatch that leg, Bam Bam.

Ivan TEdescoIvan Tedesco is living up his retirement from racing, and loving being a test rider for the Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki team.

On this day in motocross, the 2018 Outdoor National season kicked off in Prairie City, California (Sacramento) at the historic Hangtown Raceway. This was infact the 50th running year of the historic event. Riders only had two weeks off since the last round of Vegas Supercross to prepare, but that didn’t stop the fast 40 in each division (250/450) from giving it their all. Here’s how the day panned out.

Eli TomacIn qualifying, it was all about defending champion Eli Tomac in the 450 class.

Zach OsborneAnd 250 defending champion Zach Osborne dominated the 250’s.

HANGTOWNRiders were breaking in the new up hill whopp section.

Ryan Villopoto Wil HahnAfter qualifying, all eyes went to the starting gate as the 125 All Star “Dream Race” was set to take place. This race had some heavy hitters. But, it was all about one rider in particular.

Aiden TijeroHis name is Aiden Tijero. This 16 year old Orange Brigade backed 125cc and 250 B rider lit the track on fire with his dominating performance in the 125 Dream Race. He beat Ryan Villopoto (2nd), Wil Hahn (3rd) and the rest of the All Star Field.

Hangtown 2018After the two-strokes cleared the way, the ladies made their way to the starting line for opening ceremonies.

Aaron PlessingerAaron Plessinger Roman soldiered his way to the gate and experienced opening ceremonies in style.

Joey SavatgyIf you look closely, you can see the intensity in Joey Savatgy’s eyes.  After the crowd came to a silence, it was time to start the engines and begin the 2018 Pro Motocross season.

Justin CooperStar Racing’s Justin Cooper (62) jumped to the early lead. But after the laps ticked away he ended up fifth in 250 Moto 1. Featured above was the pass for the lead executed by Zach Osborne (1).

Austin ForknerAustin Forkner actually pulled the holeshot in 250 Moto 1. But like Cooper, the laps got the best of him. He crossed the line fourth.

Aaron PlessingerAaron Plessinger was making some big moves, and landed himself in third.

Jeremy MartinThe two-time 250 outdoor champion Jeremy Martin was holding himself in second.

Zach OsborneAnd of course, Zach Osborne dominated the first 250 Moto. Next up, 450’s.

Ken RoczenIn the 450’s, we got to see fan favorite Ken Roczen return to the series. He hasn’t raced since San Diego, Supercross due to his crash that broke his arm.

450 Start HangtownThe great outdoors. Heres how 450 Moto 1 panned out.

Weston PeickWeston Peick had a great jump out of the gate, and crossed the line in fifth.

Jason AndersonJason Anderson was not far behind in fourth.

Justin BArciaThe Yamaha factory rider Justin Barcia pulled together a solid performance and ended up with a third.

Eli TomacThis right here is what cost Marvin Musquin the overall win. He hit the wrong line, and jumped off the track. He still scored a second in 450 Moto 1.

Eli TomacEli Tomac capitalized on the mistakes of Marvin and took the win.

Michael MosimanMichael Mosiman deep in thought before his next moto.

Carrie BowlingMotocross is very fast paced as opposed to Supercross events. So right after the 450 guys pulled off, it was up to the 250 guys to take heed and make it happen in their final moto.

Justin CooperSame as in Moto 1, Justin Cooper crossed the line in fifth. Which means, he scored a fifth overall on the day.

Alex MArtinAlex Martin threw together a succesful ride in 250 Moto 2. He went 7-3 for a fourth overall.

Aaron PlessingerAaron Plessinger went 3-4 for a third overall. The current 250 West Supercros champion scored well for round 1.

This would be a very boring 450 Nationals season if it wasn’t for the resurrection of Ken Roczen as a power player. Without Roczen, Eli Tomac would be running wild.

Although Justin Barcia wasn’t necessarily headed for a “Joe Job” back home in New York, his professional motocross career was on the skids. He turned it around in 2018.

Eli Tomac has every reason to be cocky. He has won three straight 450 Nationals and is on top of the world. But, he’s been here before, so a little humility is in order.

Marvin Musquin has the speed and skill to win races, but something about the first three Nationals (Hangtown, Glen Helen and Thunder Valley) stymied him. He needs to find that flow and keep it longer than for three or four laps—then he will be in the mix.

Phil Nicoletti has been a consistent top ten finisher out west, where he hates it, but now that’s he’s headed back east he needs to find a couple more places to show that he’s not another wannabe Californian. Number one on his hit list has to be teammate Weston Peick.

Blake Baggett (4) came alive in Colorado. He was as solid as we are used to seeing him. And, while this looks like a holeshot, Justin Barcia (51) would tuck it under him in the next 20 feet.

Benny Bloss (60) has shown moments of brilliance between showing the fans the bottom of his KTM. Once he settles in to the speed at the front, he’s gonna do really well.

Nick Schmidt isn’t celebrating, he’s just glad it’s over. We give him credit during the Nationals because his Supercross skills are so much better than his outdoor skills, but he came to Thunder Valley to give it a shot—albeit going 23-38.

John Perry organized the Glen Helen 250 Two-Stroke Challenge race, and Alpinestars race rep Justin Muscutt finished 7th in it. At Thunder Valley, John was hanging out and Justin was taking a quick break from his duties.
Wil Hahn won the Thunder Valley 125 Dream race, but he had an ulterior motive…

…He came right back to the 250 starting line to tell his Star Yamaha charges about possible lines and places where the track had changed.

You can’t always get a factory riders autograph over at their semi truck, but there is one spot in the pits where you can catch up to them.

250 NATIONAL

As a two-time AMA 250 National Champion Jeremy Martin knows what its like to hold on to a points lead—now he has to put that knowledge to work.

Jeremy Martin’s brother Alex (26) is third in 250 points.

Justin Cooper won the first 250 moto, although it took Joey Savatgy’s engine malfunction to seal the deal. Unfortunately, a second moto 8th ruined his fairytale day

Hawaiian Brian Medeiors (934) was flying at Thunder Valley. Unfortunately, he was flying in the pits also. His EZ-Up started to blow away and the 130-pound Pro grabbed hold of it as it lifted off. Brian ended up being tossed full force with his knee against the footpeg of his bike. He needed stitches, lots of them, but elected to race instead.

Zach Osborne, nursing a thumb injury, went 5-20 after being taken out in the first turn crash in the second moto. He charged for 35 minutes and was rewarded with one AMA point. That one point might be important by round 12.

Photos by Brian Converse.Ken Roczen grabs the first moto holeshot in Muddy Creek.

The fifth round of the 2018 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championships was held in Muddy Creek, Tennessee. There was a first time winner in the 250 class, Jeremy Martin fractured a vertebra and Eli Tomac had competition. With the series making a full move to the east, this meant track conditions would become drastically different from the usual “dry California style” most of the riders are used to. Conditions on this day were slightly damp and overcast with a brush of humidity. 250 powerhouse Aaron Plessinger was looking to extend his points lead, while 450 contender Eli Tomac looking to get back to his win streak. Here’s how the day broke down.

Justin Cooper absolutely dominated qualifying in the 250 class by almost two full seconds.

And as expected, Eli Tomac did the same in the 450 class.

Alex Ray Justin Barcia 2018 MUDDY CREEK NATIONAL-1909Factory Yamaha gave Alex Ray (fill-in for Cooper Webb) the opportunity to race his hometown race on a factory bike.

FansFans came from far and wide to witness all the action.

Two StrokesWe were able to witness yet another 125 two-stroke race at a National. Oh how the sound takes us back. Ezra Hastings (51) won $3000 plus a $500 holeshot bonus.

Joey SavatgyThe national anthem is a big part of racing. Joey Savatgy pays his respect to the flag before they drop the gate for the first 250 moto of the day.

Austin ForknerAustin Forkner crossed the line in 5th in 250 Moto 1.

Rj HampshireRJ Hampshire managed to pull together a great start, and finished 4th.

Shane McElrathShane McElrath had some major pressure from R.J. Hampshire, but he held him off for 3rd in moto one.

Justin CooperJustin Cooper has been nailing his starts lately. He ran in second the entire first moto.

Jeremy MartinJeremy Martin put together an amazing performance, and dominated the first 250 Moto. He placed 1st. Unfortunately, we would not see much of him in Moto 2 due to a first turn crash. He would DNF, and be transported to the hospital.
